Single Moms--Statistics
This new breed of single mom does not fit that old stereotype of the unwed teen on welfare. She's still likely to be financially insecure, but she might be of all ages and of any race. The median age for unmarried moms may be in her late 20s, and also the quickest-growing category is white women. She might be divorced or never-married. 40 % live with men who might be the fathers of their kids because the Census numbers also demonstrated, there is nearly a 72 percent rise in the number of cohabiting couples, a lot of whom take along children from previous relationships. She can also be a single mom by choice. Unwed motherhood has lost a lot of its stigma and has been glamorized by celebrity heroines like Rosie O'Donnell and Calista Flockhart. "Two decades ago middle-class women thought it required a guy to possess a child, but that is no longer true," states Rosanna Hertz, chair from the women's studies department at Wellesley College. "We have arrived at a watershed moment."
Single Mothers--Financial Stability
More women be more educated and able to better support themselves--so a husband is no longer an economic prerequisite to motherhood. This is a huge social change in the past few decades. Carolyn Feuer, 30, a registered nurse from New York was able to make the decision to not marry her boyfriend when she became pregnant with Ryan, now 6. "It can't happen to be a great marriage," she states. "It's better for the two of us by doing this, especially for my boy." Her steady salary meant she has options. "I have an apartment,"she says. "I have a car. I felt there is no reason why I should not have the baby. I felt I possibly could provide whatever it needed as far as love and support and that i haven't regretted it for one minute since."
Single Moms--High Expectation about Marriage?
For a lot of women, the barrier to marriage might be they care too much about it, and they would like to get it right. When they aren't able to find an ideal soulmate of their dreams, they'd rather stay single. So they are putting off that walk down the aisle until after college, grad school or beginning a job and placing a little money in the bank. "Paradoxically, more and more people today value marriage," states Frank Furstenberg, professor of sociology in the College of Pennsylvania. "They take it seriously. This is exactly why they are more prone to cohabit. They need to be certain before they go ahead and take ultimate step." The average age of first marriage has become 25 for ladies and 27 for males--up from 20 and 23 in 1960. This is the highest ever, which leaves sufficient time for any live-in relationship to check a possible partner's compatibility. "Today it's unusual if you do not live with someone before you decide to marry them," states Andrew Cherlin, a sociologist at Johns Hopkins College. "Before 1970, it had not been respectable among anybody however the poor."
Single Moms--Is Cohabitation a Right Choice?
A few of these women are children of divorce who don't wish to make their own offsprings suffer the pain of watching a parent or guardian leave. They see living together like a type of trial marriage with no legal entanglements which make splitting up so difficult to do--although research signifies that cohabiting couples don't have a much better track record. "They are attempting to give their marriage a better chance, says Diane Sollee, founder of the Coalition for Marriage, Family and Couples Education. "They are not attempting to be immoral and get away with something."
